000331 Burger King To Bring Back Pokemon

March 11, 2000

Miami - Burger King plans to bring back its Pokemon promotion for an encore next week without the toy balls blamed in the deaths of two infants.

Millions of the toys were handed out with Burger King children's meals late last year in what the nation's second biggest fast-food restaurant company says was one of its most popular promotions.

The toys and trading cards created a stampede at some Burger King restaurants. Some restaurants ran out of toys and cards.

The encore promotion, which will start Monday, is to coincide with the video release of “Pokemon: The First Movie,” the Warner Bros. animated feature based on the television show and trading cards.

The promotion is expected to last two weeks and the burger chain also will be giving away $2 coupons for the video.

It will also give away cards and 57 different toys but won't put them in the Poke balls that served as carriers for the toys last year.

Burger King recalled its Poke balls after a 13-month California girl suffocated on the toy in December and a 4-month old Indianapolis boy died in January when the ball-shaped container lodged over his mouth and nose.

The company later ran a national television commercial warning of the potential hazard.
