000244 Industry Gathers to Celebrate Approval Irradiation

February 19, 2000

Washington - Celebrating approval of food irradiation technology for red meat, FOOD TECHnology Service, Inc., along with Grocery Manufacturers of America and Food Marketing Institute, is serving up irradiated hamburgers and chicken sandwiches at an informational luncheon on Capitol Hill.

“Just like pasteurization of milk, this is an important development in keeping America's food supply safe,” says FTSI's CEO, Pete Ellis. “This technology is supported by the American Medical Association, the World Health Organization and the American Dietetic Association, and has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Now it's time to educate consumers about this powerful tool that will enhance the safety of our nation's food supply.”

Food industry associations -- such as GMA and FMI -- and health officials are also calling for increased consumer education that will communicate the benefits of irradiation, which can reduce or eliminate harmful pathogens, such as Salmonella, E. coli 0157:H7, and Listeria -- three major causes of food- borne illnesses.

“Irradiation provides everyone with an extra margin of food safety,” added Ellis. “It gives manufacturers and processors an additional tool to effectively ensure safety of meats, fruits and vegetables for consumers -- but it is not a substitute for proper food handling practices.”

The USDA will permit the sale of irradiated red meat beginning on February 23, 2000. Florida-based Colorado Boxed Beef is launching a new brand of irradiated beef, called New Generation, available in the near future and served at the food safety celebration on the Hill.
