000238 Colorado Firm Recalls Beef Products For E. Coli

February 19, 2000

Washington - A Colorado company is recalling ground beef products out of concern the meat may be contaminated with the potentially deadly E. coli bacteria, the Agriculture Department said.

Callaway Packing, Inc. of Delta, Colorado, is recalling 4,600 pounds of ground beef, ground beef patties, beef patty mix and beef cube steak after routine government testing discovered traces of E. coli in the meat, the USDA said.

E. coli is a potentially deadly pathogen that can cause diarrhea and dehydration.

No illnesses have been linked to the recalled beef products, the Agriculture Department said.

The beef patties and beef cube steak were distributed to a prison in Colorado while the ground beef and beef patty mix were distributed throughout the state.
