000209 Tabacco-Style Lawsuit Against Meat Industry?

February 6, 2000

Washington - Neal Barnard, head of the Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine, has been named the 1999 Nanny of the Year by the Guest Choice Network for demanding a tobacco-style federal lawsuit against the meat industry and fast-food restaurants.

The Nanny Awards are presented annually by the Guest Choice Network to those activists, organizations and bureaucrats who work tirelessly to restrict our food, beverage and lifestyle choices. Those recognized have shown outstanding initiative, creativity and determination in their efforts to protect us from ourselves.

The Guest Choice Network is a 30,000-member coalition of restaurant and tavern operators who work together to preserve the right to offer guests a full menu of dining and entertainment choices.

The other 1999 Nanny Award winners are:

USDA Secretary Dan Glickman wins the “Public Disservice” Award for leading the USDA's new “anti-fat” campaign, including a planned “nutritional intervention” program in Mississippi.

Carnival Cruise Lines wins the “Nicotine Nannies” Award for evicting a passenger for simply possessing tobacco on their smoke-free “Paradise” ship.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest wins the “Freshman Food Fight” Award for attempting to make the case that the soft drink beverage industry is to blame for obesity, heart disease and caffeine addiction.

Greenpeace wins the “Junk Science Junkets” Award for creating a worldwide panic by misrepresenting the results a small study that looked at the effect of genetically engineered corn on Monarch butterfly caterpillars.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving wins the “Beverage Bashers” Award for trying to ban beer at the new Tierra Verde Golf Club in Arlington, TX.

Action on Smoking and Health wins the “Playing the Kid Card” Award for claiming without evidence that 15 kids die every day from their parents' secondhand smoke.

Elliot Katz wins the “Keepers of the Animal Kingdom” Award for spearheading the “human rights for animals” movement.

Former Beatle Paul McCartney is 1999's inductee into the Nanny Hall of Fame. While many admire his sentimental soul, McCartney's financial support for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals in 1999 included a sold-out rock concert in their honor. His support allows PETA to raise the decibel level of their already shrill campaign to tax meat and end many forms of important medical research.
