000132 McDonalds Last in Big-3 Burger Stand-Off

January 25, 2000

Utica, NY - McDonald's finished a distant third in a recent Zogby poll to determine America's favorite fast-food burger. McDonald's, which pioneered the fast-food revolution and remains one of the most recognizable trademarks of American culture worldwide, finished a last in a three-way scramble for the title of America's best burger maker. In the nationwide survey of 1,078 adults, 38.7% agreed that Burger King makes the best fast-food hamburger of the three major national burger chains.

Wendy's finished a close second at 33.6%, and McDonald's trailed behind at a paltry 14.7%.

McDonald's did best with adults aged 18-29 but Burger King triumphed among all age groups, except for adults 30-49, who favored Wendy's.

The race was tightest among those with only a high school education. Burger King again won easily with 37.9% of the vote, but Wendy's eked out only a 27.7% to 23.1% victory over the Golden Arches. Among Americans with a college education or better, Wendy's edged out BK with McDonald's receiving only 11.7% of responses.

What we asked:

“Who makes the best fast-food Hamburger: Wendy's, McDonald's, or Burger King?”
