991239 Foodarama Recalls 900 Lbs of NJ Deli Meat

December 15, 1999

Washington - Foodarama Supermarkets Inc. is recalling approximately 900 pounds of deli meat from locations in central New Jersey out of concern the food may be contaminated with Listeria bacteria, USDA said.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the Foodarama meat, which includes bologna, liverwurst, pastrami, turkey, ham and corned beef.

U.S. investigators discovered listeria during routine testing of Foodarama meat. The recalled deli slices were only sold in central New Jersey, the USDA said. Foodarama is based in Linden, N.J.

Exposure to food contaminated with listeria can be fatal to the elderly, children or people with weak immune systems. It can also cause stillbirths. But for most people, listeria infection causes high fever, headaches and neck stiffness.

Consumers should check their refrigerators for Foodarama deli meat featuring the “World Class Kitchens” label and either “EST.P5495” or “EST.5495” in the USDA seal.
