991019 Subway Restaurants Hit 14,000 Units World Wide

Milford, CT - The 14,000th location of the largest submarine sandwich chain in the world, SUBWAY Restaurants, opened last week in the beautiful South Australian City of Mount Gambier.

“Every milestone in development is exciting. Having the 14,000th location open in Australia is fantastic,” said President and Co-Founder Fred DeLuca, “Our global expansion is one of the most aggressive aspects of this business.” The people of Mount Gambier are excited to have their first submarine sandwich shop in right in the middle of the business and shopping district. The city of approximately 25,000 people is known for its famous “Blue Lake” and an extinct volcano. Owners Trevor and Angela Wardle and are experiencing excellent sales in their first week of operation. “The local community have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of a fast, clean, healthy food, says Trevor Wardle.

According to Development Agent, Bruce Koehne, it is one of the most successful openings in South Australia and is very close to the top sales in all of Australia for the first week of operation.

President, Fred DeLuca, opened the first SUBWAY restaurant in the summer of 1965 with a $1000 loan from family friend, Dr. Peter Buck. DeLuca needed to money to finance a college education. Dr. Buck came up with the idea to start a submarine sandwich shop during a family picnic. The pair continued to develop sandwich shops in the years to follow and the first franchise was sold in 1974. Currently SUBWAY restaurants are located in 71 countries throughout the world.

“Our international development is really starting to take flight, the 14,000th location opening in an Australian city, much like Middle America, is proof of that,” said Don Fertman, Director of Franchise Sales.

Australians welcomed their first SUBWAY restaurant in 1994 in Perth, Western Australia. There are currently 223 locations and 15 in development throughout Australia. Brisbane hosts one of three SUBWAY franchisee-training facilities to prepare new owners to operate their restaurant. The other two are located at the chain's world headquarters in Milford, Connecticut, USA and San Jose, Costa Rica.

Countries slated to open their first SUBWAY restaurant before the new millennium include Guyana, Zambia, India, and Poland.

SUBWAY Restaurants has been ranked as one of the top ten fast food franchise chains by Entrepreneur Magazine, Entrepreneur International, QSR Magazine, and Restaurant and Institutions. Each SUBWAY restaurant is franchisee owned.
