991001 Floods Won't Affect NC Meat Prices

October 2, 1999

Raleigh, NC - A North Carolina State University expert says the loss of 100,000 hogs to Hurricane Floyd probably won't affect what you pay for bacon, ham and sausage.

NC State agricultural economist Dr. Kelly Zering says the dead hogs represent about 1% of the state's inventory, and only a tiny fraction of the nation's stock. He says much larger increases in inventory have not affected prices at the grocery store.

Zering also expects some producers to use the situation as an opportunity to change or upgrade facilities, and possibly make improvements in waste handling.
