990812 Two More Meat Recalls For Possible Listeria

August 7, 1999

Washington - Two companies recalled meat in Pennsylvania and New Jersey after deadly listeria bacteria were spotted in their products, the U.S. Agriculture Department said.

Loefflers Gourmet, Inc., of Trenton, N.J., recalled 200 pounds of sausage that were distributed only in the Trenton area from the company's retail outlet, the USDA said.

Gerrity's Supermarket of Kingston, Pa., recalled 200 pounds of hot dogs that were distributed at the company's stores in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area in Pennsylvania, according to the USDA.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the meat recalled Friday. Government inspectors discovered the bacteria during routine testing, the USDA said.

Exposure to food contaminated with listeria can cause stillbirths or be fatal to the elderly, children or people with weak immune systems. For most people, listeria infection causes high fever, headaches and stiffness in the neck.

The cases are the latest in a series of recalls, which began late last year, of food contaminated with listeria bacteria. In one case, 15 deaths and six miscarriages and stillbirths were linked to an outbreak of listeria associated with the products of a Michigan company.
