990754 Listeria Shuts North Carolina Meat Plant

July 26, 1999

Williamston, NC - Inspectors have shut down a Williamston meat packing plant after a second sample of meat made there tested positive for listeria. White Packing Company will remain closed until repairs can be made and testing procedures are improved. North Carolina agricultural officials recorded the second positive test for the bacteria last week. Doctor David Marshal -- with the Meat and Poultry Inspection Service -- says condensation is a problem in some packing plants. All of the products that tested positive for listeria were destroyed at the plant and were NOT distributed to stores.

More than 16-thousand pounds of ready-to-eat meat products were recalled in may because of a similar problem.
