990728 Hearings Begin On S.D. Livestock Law

July 24, 1999

Aberdeen, SD - Ranchers from across South Dakota gathered in Aberdeen as a federal court began hearings on the controversial "Senate Bill 95" which became law earlier this month. The mandatory price reporting law is similar to legislation now before Congress.

The American Meat Institute, the largest meat packer in the nation, filed suit in federal court after the law took affect July first. AMI says the law violates interstate commerce regulations and is unconstitiutional.

State Attorney General Mark Barnett disagrees and has said he will "vigorously defend" the law. AMI has refused to buy livestock in South Dakota until the matter is settled by the court.
