990722 U.S. Firm Recalls Undercooked Beef Tips

July 17, 1999

Washington - A Texas company issued a nationwide recall of 600,000 pounds of beef tips and gravy because the food may have been undercooked, the U.S. Agriculture Department said.

No illnesses were reported from the three-pound cartons of beef tips sold through mail order deliveries, restaurants and food service outlets, a USDA spokeswoman said.

“Because of the potential for foodborne illness, we urge consumers who have purchased the suspect product not to eat it and to return it to the place of purchase,” said Tom Billy, administrator of USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The packages were sold under the brand names Haugin's Pride Beef Tips and Gravy and Schwan's Beef Tips and Gravy. The affected product was marked with the USDA inspection seal “EST 7261A.”

The recall by Gorges/Quick-To-Fix Foods Inc of Harlingen, Tex, involves beef tips produced between March 1 and July 15 that were sold throughout the United States and in Canada.

A company spokesman was not available to comment.

The USDA said the recall grew out of a consumer complaint that a package of the beef tips contained undercooked meat.
