June 15, 1999

Comments from Republican presidential hopefuls during campaigning in Iowa, including a visit on the Iowa State Fairgrounds for the World Pork Expo:

“I think people in Iowa want straight talk. I think they want people with the courage of their convictions. That's what I call courageous conservatism and that's what I bring to the table.” - Elizabeth Dole.

“I haven't seen so much pork since the highway bill passed in Congress about a year ago.” - U.S. Rep. John Kasich of Ohio.

“We're raising about $35,000 a day in small donations. I've got the best chance to break through.” - conservative activist Gary Bauer.

“While Bill Clinton has been diddling and Al Gore has been cheerleading, more farmers have been going out of business than during the farm crisis of the 1980s.” - Former Tennessee Gov. Lamar Alexander.

“The next president, whoever she may be, must stabilize the farm economy by exercising leadership to expand domestic markets and increase exports.” - Mrs. Dole.

“I hate critiquing everybody else.” - Bauer.

“If Mr. Clinton and Mr. Gore had been chasing foreign markets as hard as they have been chasing foreign campaign contributions, corn and hog prices would be a lot higher today.” - Alexander.
