990619 Glickman Expects Hog Aid This Week

June 15, 1999

Washington - U.S. Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman said on Monday that he expects to announce more financial assistance for hog producers later this week.

Glickman made the comment in a speech to members of the Georgia Farm Bureau.

Earlier this year, Congress approved $145 million in assistance for pork producers as part of a supplemental spending bill for fiscal 1999, which ends Sept. 30.

The same bill also authorized the Agriculture Department to spend up to $100 million of existing funds to help hog producers who have suffered from low prices.

Glickman said on Monday the department would use the funds to make payments to producers.
