990505 Canada Sets Winnipeg Costco Beef Warning

WINNIPEG, April 29 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Costco Wholesale are warning the public not to consume Kirkland Signature Lean Ground Beef, Item No. 21927 with a pack date of April 10, 1999, sold in packages of approximately 3kg and purchased from Costco Wholesale located at 1315 St. James Street, Winnipeg, MB.

Costco Wholesale is voluntarily recalling this product because it may contain Escherichia coli 0157:H7 bacteria and there has been one possible illness reported to date. This Health Alert applies only to this product sold at the Winnipeg St. James Costco Wholesale warehouse. Members who purchased this product may return it to Costco Wholesale for a refund.

E. coli 0157:H7 may cause life-threatening illness by producing a toxin that breaks down the lining of the intestines and damages the kidneys. Food contaminated with E. coli bacteria will not look or smell spoiled. This product should not be consumed. Consumers are reminded to cook all ground beef products to a minimum of 71 degrees C or 160 degrees F.
