990370 Thorn Apple Valley Reorganizes for Quality

March 19, 1999

Southfield, MI - Thorn Apple Valley has announced a reorganization of its Food Safety and Quality Assurance Department. Dr. Mohammad Azam, Vice President Food Safety and Quality Assurance, will report directly to Joel Dorfman, President and CEO in an effort to increase awareness and focus on product safety and product quality. All local plant QA management will report to Dr. Azam, creating an independent group for QA.

“We need to increase our focus on product safety and product quality,” Joel Dorfman, President and CEO said. “Consumer safety is our highest priority, therefore, I wanted the QA department to report directly to me. We are committed to taking all the necessary steps to ensure we deliver only the best and safest products to our customers and consumers.”

In addition to this organizational change, a “President's Food Safety and Quality Hot Line” has been established to allow direct access to the president by any employee on food safety or quality issues. Thorn Apple Valley is also working with a group of food safety experts under the direction of Kansas State University in order to establish the most comprehensive food safety program in the meat industry.

“The recent listeria recall has caused some concern regarding the safety of meat products. Although the USDA has confirmed that no one has become ill or died from any of our Thorn Apple Valley products, we are implementing a very comprehensive food safety program that will assure that our customers feel good about eating our products. These are the first of many initiatives Thorn Apple Valley is undertaking to make our products better and safer,” Dr. Azam said.
