990167 Canada Pledges $2.4 Million to Ukraine Beef Industry

January 28, 1999

Winnipeg, Canada - The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) announced a C$2.4 million program to help Ukraine modernize its beef and feed production industries.

“Today's partnership gives us the opportunity to exchange our best agricultural practices and it opens important markets to our producers and manufacturers,” said Roy Romanow, premier of the province of Saskatchewan, in a statement.

Experts from Saskatchewan and the province of Manitoba will travel to Ukraine to train more than 200 agricultural specialists, who in turn will train individual farmers in beef cattle and feed production practices and genetics.

On a state visit to Ukraine, Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien pledged his country's support to the former Soviet republic but said it would have to move forward with badly-needed economic reforms.

Ukraine shares good relations with Canada, which has a large population of Ukrainian immigrants.
