981289 Grocers Resist Lowering Meat Prices

PIERRE, SD - The executive director of the South Dakota Retailers Association says he doesn't see how asking grocers in the state to sell meat at cost will do farmers any good. Jerry Wheeler says meat prices at most grocery stores are already low enough to entice consumers to shop there. He says grocers' profits on meat are not any bigger than they were at this same time last year. Last week, Governor Bill Janklow sent letters to grocers across the state... asking them to sell red meat and pork at cost to show support for producers... who are in crisis due to low commodity prices.
