Raleigh, NC - An environmental organization is using the Internet to detail the environmental impact of hog feedlots. The North Carolina Environmental Defense Fund's web page includes the world's first “poop counter”. Spokesman Joe Rudek says web surfers can watch the counter numbers roll up the tons of hog waste being deposited each second. The state legislature put a moratorium on feedlot expansion until something can be done to handle the waste... but environmentalists say the moratorium is ticking toward expiration without a solution to the problem.
