981230 Pillsbury Buys Meat Pie Company

San Juan, Puerto Rico - Food manufacturer Pillsbury announced Monday it will buy Productos Kikuet, Puerto Rico's largest maker of traditional meat pies, and introduce the products to other markets.

The Minneapolis-based company is trying to strengthen its presence in Latin America and expand into Hispanic markets in the United States.

Pillsbury owns other refrigerated food companies in Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela. The company would not disclose the terms of the purchase.

Kikuet, founded in 1997 in San Juan, has two factories and about 170 employees. It has 124 products.

Among other brands, Pillsbury produces foods under the Green Giant, Old El Paso, Haagen-Dazs, Progresso, Hungry Jack and Totino's labels.
