981212 New York Company Recalls Beef After E.Coli Found

December 3, 1998

Washington - A New York packing firm has recalled 8,500 lbs of ground beef after a dangerous strain of E.coli bacteria was spotted in routine testing, a U.S. Agriculture Department spokeswoman said Tuesday.

All of the meat recalled by M&W Packing Inc. of New York was sold to wholesale distributors and none of the meat landed in consumers' hands, the spokeswoman said. M&W is recalling 10- pound chubs of fresh ground beef, ground beef patties and frozen ground beef patties produced on Nov 23.

E.coli 0157:H7 bacteria can cause bloody diarrhea and kidney failure and is especially dangerous for the elderly, small children and people with weakened immune systems.
