981029 Hormel Donates Food to Dominican Republic

October 22, 1998

AUSTIN, MN - Food is being provided to victims of Hurricane Georges in the Dominican Republic by Hormel Foods Corporation, a multinational meat and food processor headquartered in Austin, Minn.

Hormel Foods, in cooperation with Walton & Post, a distributor in Miami, Fla., has shipped 36,000 pounds of cubed beef and gravy to residents of the Dominican Republic ravaged by the storm Sept. 22. All 3,200 cases of 15-ounce canned product are being distributed to CARITAS, a worldwide charitable organization of the Catholic church.

No refrigeration is required for the cubed beef product which will enable distribution to relief centers throughout the country of four million people. Each serving of this product provides 25 grams of protein.

Storm damage on the Dominican Republic, located approximately 600 miles southeast of Florida, totaled an estimated $5 billion from the 120 mile-per-hour winds and flooding. The death toll reached 250 and more than 100,000 people were left homeless, with nearly 90 percent of the homes damaged or destroyed on the Caribbean nation comprised of 18,700 square miles.

“We are pleased to provide aid to the victims of this disastrous storm in the Dominican Republic,” said V. Allan Krejci, Hormel Foods director of public relations. “We're glad to help ease the suffering these individuals are facing as they clean up the devastation.”

This is the second time in less than one year that Hormel Foods has come to the aid of countries hit by storms. In December 1997, the corporation supplied 40,000 pounds of SPAM luncheon meat and several varieties of Hormel chili to Guam after a typhoon struck the small island in the Pacific Ocean.
