981001 Michigan McDonald's Introduces “The Big Xtra”

October 9, 1998

Southfield, MI - The dreams of burger lovers across Metro Detroit were fulfilled when McDonald's Restaurants of Southeastern Michigan introduced the Big Xtra sandwich, McDonald's largest burger ever. Area residents can now enjoy the delicious taste of a big lettuce and tomato burger along with America's Favorite Fries.

"We're always reviewing our menu and listening to our customers' preferences," said James Collins, Southeast Michigan McDonald's District Manager. "We've learned that many of our customers wanted us to offer a larger sandwich with the taste of lettuce and tomato. The McDonald's Big Xtra should more than satisfy those who desire that taste."

The McDonald's Big Xtra is made with a large 100% beef patty, chopped lettuce, a slice of tomato, slivered onions, pickles, ketchup, mayonnaise, salt and pepper and served on a Deluxe-style bun. Customers also have the option of adding a slice of cheese.

The introduction of the Big Xtra in Metro Detroit means that the sandwich is now available throughout the entire Michigan region. The sandwich was introduced earlier this year in outstate Michigan where it quickly became a favorite.

"McDonald's has always been a value leader and the new McDonald's Big Xtra sandwich delivers on that promise by offering more beef than our competitors at a great price," said Collins.

McDonald's is the largest and best-known global foodservice retailer with more than 23,300 restaurants in 111 countries. Approximately 84% of McDonald's U.S. restaurants are owned and operated by independent franchisees.
