980938 Maple Leaf Appoints CEO

Toronto, Ontario - The Board of Directors of Maple Leaf Foods Inc. is pleased to announce that, effective January 1, 1999 Michael H. McCain, currently the President and Chief Operating Officer of Maple Leaf Foods Inc., will become President and Chief Executive Officer.

At the Annual Shareholders meeting of Maple Leaf Foods on May 7, 1998, Archibald D. McLean, Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the company, announced that he would be leaving Maple Leaf Foods Inc. on January 1, 1999. Purdy Crawford, Chairman of the Human Resources Committee of the Board of Directors of Maple Leaf Foods Inc., stated, "During the last three years, Michael McCain has made a tremendous contribution to the evolution of Maple Leaf Foods. He has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to repositioning Maple Leaf Foods as a world class food processing company. We are confident he will continue to do an outstanding job."
