980937 Churchs Chicken Opening Restaurants In Gas Stations

September 16, 1998

Atlanta, GA - Churchs Chicken and Phillips Petroleum Company announced an agreement to open full-service Churchs restaurants in combination with 25 Phillips 66 gas and convenience locations. The agreement enables both companies to expand and showcase their brands. It also marks the first time in the company's history that Churchs has signed a significant development agreement with the corporate entity of a major petroleum company.

With the agreement, Churchs, a division of Atlanta-based AFC Enterprises, will be a provider of Southern fried chicken for Phillips. A majority of the combination facilities, which will feature Phillips' Kicks 66 convenience stores, will be built from the ground up. The remaining restaurants will involve conversions or additions to existing Kicks 66 stores. All of the facilities will include drive-thrus and Churchs exterior signage.

A majority of the restaurants will open across the Midwest - an expansion opportunity for Churchs, whose stores are located primarily in the southeast. It is a five-year agreement with the first restaurants expected to open later this year in Utah.

"We are thrilled about this partnership," said Hannibal Myers, Churchs vice president of new business development. "This is the first time Churchs has worked directly with the corporate level of a petroleum company on a deal of this nature versus working with individuals who franchise from them."

Myers noted, "Phillips truly understands how to work with branded QSR's to provide value to their customers. They understand that foodservice is a different business from gas and convenience stores and that companies need to look closely at their own capabilities and find partners that complement them. At Churchs we are able to offer Phillips a small, flexible restaurant layout, great business partner support and our food concepts fit very well with Phillips customers."
