980668 Australia's Red Meat Industry Enters a New Era

June 30, 1998 Australia's red meat industry has entered a new era, with a new producer- owned company - Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) - commencing operations today.

The formation of MLA is part of an overall restructuring of the Australian red meat industry by the Federal Government, which has seen the emergence of three new companies, MLA the Australian Meat Processors Corporation and Livecorp, and the abolition of the Meat Industry Council, the Australian Meat and Live-stock Corporation and the Meat Research Corporation.

MLA Managing Director, Richard Brooks, said MLA represents a new phase of co-operation and opportunity between Australia's red meat industry and it's international customers and business partners.

"As the world's largest exporter of red meat, the Australian red meat industry, through MLA, will continue to work co-operatively with members of the trade worldwide, to ensure Australia maintains its excellent reputation as a supplier of safe, quality assured product," Mr Brooks said.

Mr Brooks said to ensure Australian red meat producers receive the correct market signals, and to satisfy the demands of those doing business with the MLA, MLA will maintain the international offices currently based in Korea, Japan, the United States and the Middle East, established under the AMLC.

"It's vital that in a time of increased global competition that MLA maintains strong, supportive relationships with both government and domestic industry bodies to ensure Australian product meets customer expectations at an international level," Mr Brooks said.

"MLA's international offices will continue to act both as a conduit for gathering and feeding back essential international market information, as well as providing MLA's international customers with up-to-date market overviews, product specifications, information resource for our product and marketing programs."

Mr Brooks stressed that many international programs, developed and funded under the AMLC, such as food safety initiatives and assisting general trade activities will continue under MLA. Meat and Livestock Australia represents a new era in Australia's red meat industry.

MLA replaces the Australian Meat and Live-stock Corporation (AMLC) and the Meat Research Corporation (MRC), and will assume many of AMLC's and MRC's current functions.
