980542 Strike Ends At Lykes Meat Plant

May 26, 1998

Plant City, FL - Workers at the Lykes Meat Group plant in Plant City were back on the job after a six week strike was ended by a new labor contract.

Smithfield Foods Inc owns Lykes. The plant makes hot dogs, cold cuts and other meat products.

The contract between the company and United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1625 was ratified last week. It calls for wage increases of 25 cents an hour to $1.25 an hour over the 21 months of the agreement, the union said.

“Our union is pleased that by sticking together we were able to protect our benefits and receive a fair wage increase for everyone,” union President Rick Cutshaw said in a statement. He said about 500 plant employees were out of work during the strike, which began April 12.
