980428 Kaspar's Restaurant Wins Award for "Best Pairing of Beef and Wine"

April 20, 1998

Seattle, WA - Kaspar's Restaurant was awarded $500 for the "Best Pairing of Beef and Wine" at the Washington Wine Commission's Taste Washington event held at the Paramount Theater in Seattle on Sunday, April 19, 1998. The beef recipe that tantalized the taste buds of the judges was Peppercorn Herb Encrusted Washington Beef with Cabernet Brown Rice Risotto. It was paired with a 1994 Cabernet Sauvingnon from Quilceda Creek Winery.

"I just think it's nice to support the local beef industry, instead of going to the Midwest," said Kaspar Donier. "We really enjoyed the event and 'Washington Beef' really helped out by providing excellent product for the benefit."

The Washington State Beef Commission offered the prize to highlight how well Washington beef compliments the bounty of wines produced in Washington state. Thirteen of the 40 restaurants participating in Taste Washington, a benefit event to support the Washington Wine Scholarship Fund, chose to serve beef to compliment the flavor of the wine. Washington Beef, Inc. donated the beef for 8 of the 13 restaurants serving beef at the event.

In keeping with the spirit of Taste Washington, Kaspar and Nancy Donier, are donating their prize to the scholarship fund at Seattle Central Community College. Kaspar's, whose restaurant offers creative contemporary cuisine, is located on Queen Anne in Seattle.

The judging criteria consisted of ranking each beef dish for taste, tenderness, texture, originality and eye appeal. The judges also rated the flavor combinations of the beef and wine pairings. The judges included Fred Albert of Seattle Homes & Lifestyle, Providence Cicero of Seattle Magazine, Deirdre Timmons of Seattle Sidewalk, Cynthia Nims of Simply Seafood and Jenna MacPherson of Sunset Magazine.

The Washington State Beef Commission is the producer funded promotion, consumer education and research arm of the state's beef industry.
