980119 Smithfield Foods, Inc. Acquires California-Based Mohawk Packing Co.

Norfolk, VA - Smithfield Foods, Inc. announced that its John Morrell & Co. subsidiary has acquired certain of the assets and business of Mohawk Packing Co. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Mohawk Packing Co., located in San Jose, California, produces premium processed meats, primarily for the foodservice industry. The company's high- quality sliced bacon, smoked hams and other products are distributed in California, Oregon and Washington.

Mohawk Packing Co. had sales of approximately $44 million in calendar year 1997. Mohawk Packing will be operated as a division of John Morrell & Co.

"The acquisition of Mohawk Packing Co., as well as the purchase in mid- 1997 of Curly's Foods, a producer of further-processed meat products, primarily pork ribs and barbecue, for the foodservice industry, furthers Smithfield Foods' strategy to grow the processed meats and value-added sectors of its business," Joseph W. Luter, III, chairman and chief executive officer, stated.

Smithfield Foods is the largest vertically integrated producer and marketer of fresh pork and processed meats in the United States. The Company's brands include Smithfield Lean Generation Pork, Smithfield Premium, Gwaltney, Patrick Cudahy, John Morrell, Lykes, Esskay, Kretschmar, Valleydale, Jamestown, Dinner Bell, Realean, Patrick's Pride, Great, Tobin's First Prize, Peyton's and others.
