971246 Eating Fat-Free May Not Be as Healthy As You Think

December 16, 1997

Lake Bluff, IL - In recent years we have been programmed to believe that eating fat-free is the answer to all of our weight problems and must be eliminated from foods by consuming no-fat foods and cooking the non-fat way.

Unfortunately, eating fat-free will cost you more than you imagined. The very same women who agonize over fat-grams, are the same ones who are depressed, have more PMS symptoms and perimenopausal symptoms like mood swings, water retention, breast tenderness, as well as dry skin, lackluster hair and brittle nails.

It seems that it is essential for women to maintain the "healthy fats" in their bodies.

Ironically, Tonalin/CLA may be the very thing the body needs to metabolize fats. It may help reduce body fat and maintain muscle tone.

Tonalin/CLA is a fatty acid. It is derived from the linoleic acid of sunflowers. CLA is naturally available in beef, dairy products and other traditional food sources in small amounts. The amounts of CLA in our diets have been reduced, due to our lowered intake of these fats.

Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) was first discovered by Dr. Michael Pariza at the University of Wisconsin in 1978, and has been shown to have many potential health benefits. Twenty years of university laboratory research has indicated that CLA may help reduce body fat levels, while increasing lean muscle. In fact, researchers are calling CLA a previously unrecognized nutrient.

Pharmanutrients' scientists have developed a method of converting the linoleic acid content of pure vegetable oils into linoleic acid, a different molecule. Now CLA is available as tonalin, a dietary supplement.

A pilot study with 20 volunteers showed a 20 percent reduction in body fat and an increase in muscle percentage with Tonalin. Preliminary results are of great interest to researchers and therefore a more comprehensive study is currently underway to confirm Tonalin's benefits.

Instead of an unhealthy fat-free diet, women and men should "fat balance" their meals, exercise and supplement with Tonalin.

Tonalin (pronounced TONE a lin) is the commercially available form of Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA), which is patented for its ability to reduce body fat, improve muscle tone, increase nutrient usage and for its antioxidant properties. CLA is found in a variety of food, primarily meat and dairy products, has been frequently cited in scientific literature as a previously unrecognized nutrient. Tonalin/CLA converted from pure sunflower oil, was shown to significantly reduce body fat and improve muscle tone in a recent double blind clinical trial.
