971219 UK's Burger King Reassures Public on Hamburgers

December 4, 1997

LONDON - Fast food restaurant chain Burger King, owned by Grand Metropolitan Plc reassured its customers on Wednesday saying it uses only high quality meat from the forequarter and flank in its hamburgers.

"Burger King is proud of its hamburgers and wants to reassure its customers that they can eat them with total confidence," said the company in a statement.

The remarks came after the government revealed on Wednesday that BSE, or mad cow disease, might be transmitted through beef bones. Agriculture minister Jack Cunningham responded by announcing plans to ban the sale of beef on the bone, including cuts such as T- bone steaks, ribs and oxtails.

"Burger King uses only high quality meat from the forequarter and flank. The bone is removed before any processing takes place," said Burger King.

Burger King has 454 outlets in Britain.

The group said all the beef used comes from European Union approved sources and meets the quality and safety criteria set by Burger King and the government.

"Burger King only buys its beef from farms which are members of recognised farm assurance schemes, can guarantee traceability all the way back from the burger to the farm and have strict guidelines on welfare," said the company.
