971140 Nippon Meat To Spend $240 Mln On US Pig Farm,Plant

Tokyo - Nippon Meat Packers Inc said it would invest about $240 million to build a large-scale pig farm, meat processing and related facilities in Texas in the United States.

The pig farm will be able to supply 1.1 million pigs for meat products annually by 2000, a company spokesman said.

It will build a plant for making feedstuff for about $11 million.

A meat processing plant will be built for about $60 million.

The company expects to be able to cut the cost of producing pork in the United States to one-third of that in Japan, the spokesman said.
