WASHINGTON - The National Cattleman's Beef Association would like to see mandatory U.S.-origin labels on meat, a spokeswoman said Monday.
"We support efforts to make it mandatory," spokeswoman Alissa Harrison said. "Our members want it as a way to promote their product...It's more of a marketing issue."
Earlier in the day, President Clinton directed Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman to work with the U.S. livestock industry to develop guidelines for voluntary labeling of meat and meat products from U.S.-grown livestock.
