970916 Burger Wars Heat Up

September 17, 1997

OAK BROOK, Ill. _ The battle of the big burgers is entering a new phase with McDonald's introduction of its version of Burger King's Whopper just weeks after the rival hamburger franchise introduced its version of the Big Mac.

Unlike Burger King, which dubbed its newest sandwich the Big King, McDonald's hasn't quite settled on a name, opting for the QPLT _ quarter pounder with lettuce and tomato _ in Portland, Ore. Other names include the Big 'n' Tasty in Los Angeles and The Rocket in Raleigh, N.C., to memorialize a local football player.

The sauce also will vary to meet local preferences _ pepper-mustard sauce in Shreveport, La., savory in California and plain mayonnaise in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Wall Street Journal says today Burger King has seen strong sales of the Big King, which is being promoted as a giant-size Big Mac.

Both chains are selling their new sandwiches at an introductory price of 99 cents.

McDonald's latest move follows a rough year that saw the public reject its new line of offerings aimed at adults and a 55-cent promotion that left consumers confused. The failures led to a reorganization.
