The recall of 1.2 million pounds of hamburger produced by Hudson Foods Inc (HFI) is one of the largest on record, U.S. Agriculture Department officials said.
Press secretary Tom Amontree said the hamburger recall might be the second-largest ever. However, officials said they did not have at hand a list of all major recalls.
Officials said they know of at least one larger recall, involving turkey meat in 1995.
