970750 IBP Says its New Line of Fresh Meats is "Well Received"

July 18, 1997

Meat processor IBP Inc said its new fresh meats line introduced in May has received a "very positive" response.

The 21 fresh meat products are trimmed of external fat and ready to be placed in the grocery meat case.

"We believe our new consumer friendly line will help keep the retailer's meatcase full, while adding the convenience and variety,' Richard Bond, IBP president-fresh meats, said in a statement. "Since the products are case-ready, they require less work by the retail meat department."

IBP said its long-term strategy is to increase earnings and reduce volatility by investing in fresh meat plants, increasing international activities, and expanding value-added and foodservice products and distribution.

As previously announced, IBP bought The Bruss Co, a meat purveyor serving the restaurant industry.

"The purchase of Bruss, as well as our earlier acquisition of Foodbrands America, reflects our desire to build a larger and more stable earnings base, with more value-added and higher margin products," Robert Peterson, chairman, said in a statement.

IBP said it is constructing a new cold storage warehouse and expanding a cattle hide processing operation at Dakota City.

Plans also are underway for a new carcass chilling system and pork loin boning expansion at Storm Lake, Iowa.

The company said these improvements will help it meet growing international demand.
