970721 FSIS Says it Will Being Checking Up on Industry SSOPs

July 7, 1997 -- FSIS is beginning a project to follow-up on the implementation of Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures and FSIS responsibilities with SSOPs. According to the FSIS Constituent Update, "the purpose of the follow-up is to determine the extent to which the new system has been implemented and to determine where additional effort is needed to assure that the new system is working as intended."

The follow-up will consist of on-site interviews with inspection personnel and supervisors and on-site examination of records, such as PDRs and plant SSOPs. "These on-site visits are not plant reviews and they are not reviews of FSIS employees or supervisors."

FSIS plans to survey 250-300 plants nationwide. Inspection personnel and supervisors will be interviewed at all sites and record examination of SSOPs and PDRs will take place at about 50% of the plants surveyed. The site visits are tentatively scheduled to begin the week of July 21 and continue through mid-September. A final report of findings is targeted for completion by October 15.
