970710 Striking Cargill Alberta Workers Reject Offer

July 12, 1997 -- Cargill Foods Ltd said on July 14 that striking meat packers at its Alberta processing plant rejected the company's latest contract offer.

Cargill Vice President Barb Isman said that the proposal was the company's final offer to the 1600 unionized workers who went on strike the previous week at the 4000 head of cattle-a-day slaughter plant in High River, Alberta.

She said that 91% of the unionized workers rejected the deal.

"We will complete processing of the inventory in the plant and then make a determination of where to go from there," Isman said. "The use of replacement workers is our last choice but it may be our only choice," she added.

The United Food and Commercial Workers sought a C$1.95 an hour raise over three years while Cargill's last offer was C$1.50 over three years.
